About Ethel
Carrick
This fine British landscape painter
concentrated on depicting fascinating studies of Paris, the Côte
d´Azur, the Tyrol and Amsterdam. She was also an extremely skilled
floral artist and created delightful market scenes. She exhibited at
the Salon d´Automne, the Nationale and the Indépendents. In 1904 she
met Emmanuel Phillips Fox in Paris, and in 1905 they were married.
During the following years they toured
Italy and Spain together and in 1908 visited and exhibited work in
Melbourne. Returning to Australia in 1913 they were much admired by
a younger generation of local artists for the bright colours of
their French-influenced paintings. The following year they visited
Tahiti where they were both particularly impressed by Gauguin´s
work.
